For the last two years I’ve used the standard battlefoam bag that I think 90% of the Warmachine/Hordes players have used and I’ve absolutely loved it. The one challenge I had was trying to fit in models like my 2x units of steelhead halberdiers and various other awkward posed models (like some jacks, Exulon Thexus, the wrecker, etc) – Games workshop released a new series of cases with an interesting foam pattern.
Rather than put each model in it’s own spot, it had rows/columns of zig zag foam and touted you could transport your full armies with ease. With the current battlefoam situation I was always leaving 3-5 full infantry units out of the case which if you’re anything like me, you want all of your options when you go to a convention.
I use the citadel monster case (which I’m not sure they sell any more) for my 2 colossals (Earthbreaker and Galleon) and I’m actually very satisfied with it – albeit it’s a bit boxy/clunky.
I stopped by my local gaming store and took a look at the biggest new case Games Workshop released – the Crusade case. To my surprise , it is a svelte looking case. Watching the video from GW on youtube it gave the impression this thing was a beast. I purchased it and brought it home, to my surprise aside from length, it’s smaller than the Battlefoam bag in almost every single way by about 2″ (can’t see it in the photos but it’s 2″ shorter when looking at it from the side)
I emptied out my battlefoam bag COMPLETELY, I grabbed all of my models outside of the case and got to work.
First the cephalyx, those oblong shaped bastards. The uniquely long solos, the dominators with their ridiculous arms… and Thexus…
He fit, everything fit – the entire pirate boat is on a tray of it’s own.
The models that fit in this case (some may not appear due to some re-shuffling / realizing they were on my painting desk after the fact, but are in it now);
WARCASTERS: Ashlynn (Both sculpts… cause why not?) , Bart, Damiano, Shae, MACBAIN!!!!, Durgen, Thexus, Fiona, Ossrum, Magnus1, Magnus 2, Sylys (putting him here since I won’t have a section for attachments)
WARJACKS: Buccaneer, Mule, 2x Nomads, Rocinante, Vanguard, Warden, 2x Wreckers – Still room to shuffle around some more
SOLOS: Alexia2, Grogspar, 4x Agitators, Dirty Meg, Killingsworth, Eiryss2, Hawk, Gastone (Both poses… again why not?) , Gorman, Versh, Kell, Rockbottom, MacNaile, Orin, Ragman, Reinholdt, Rhupert, Taryn, Thor
UNITS: Alexia +20 risen +2 Thrall warriors, Arcane gun mages + UA, Dominator, 2x Max Mind bender + Drudges, 2x Max Mind slaver + drudges, Cylena & Nyss, Boomhowlers, Herne & Jonne, Forge Guard, Kayazy assassins + UA, Eliminators, Aiyana & Holt, Long Gunners, Press Gangers, Sea dogs + 3riflemen + UA, 2x Units of Halberdiers, Steelhead riflemen, TAC, Commodore Cannon & Crew
The case closed perfectly (in fact top photos with it closed is with it full). What did I leave on the table? Well I did lie, not everything made it in – obviously my 2 colossals, 5 cavalry, 2x renegades (which I could fit in easily), 2x gun bunnies (which I could fit in as well), a mangler (again which I could fit in), lastly Wrongeye & Snapjaw – with all of that. The only things that would be difficult to fit in would be the cavalry – but before this I was leaving out a full unit of riflemen , long gunners, kayazy assassins.
The build quality on the case is quite good, it fits nicely in the back of my vehicle which goes a long way , i don’t feel like I need to worry about it bouncing around as much like with the battlefoam bag since it is a hard plastic.
Where are it’s short falls? I noticed it immediately. No pockets. I had to unload all my cards, all my rings, all my tokens, beads, measuring tape, widgets, and markers. That said, I always have a backpack with me for game night since i have a binder with all my cards, so the backpack just became more practical, but still I can see this being a concern to some.
What I really like about it, and would recommend to somebody who doesn’t have a case – the price for Canada fully loaded with foam is $148.00
Right now a battlefoam bag with a standard foam load out is $156.99 USD – that’s $197.18 CAD at this moment. That said, I find a lot of retailers don’t carry this bag as well, so you will need to order it making the total order $156.99 USD $46 USD = $202.99 USD ( $254.95 CAD).
While I do love my battlefoam bag, it has torn once along the zipper and at the top of the bag – they do have a warranty which they cover up to a set value for reimbursement, and I just feel the nature of a cloth bag will tear/rip easier than the hard plastic.
Both bags certainly have their pros and cons and I can see advocates for both and stand behind both products – but if you don’t have easy access to a battlefoam bag, the Citadel/Games Workshop Crusade case is an adequate substitute.
